Reunion 2010

This is the first time in years that this web-site has been updated. I had been extremely busy at work.

There has been several major events during this period:

Rene Chang retired from his NHS position as Director of Transplantation at St George's Hospital, on December 18, 2009.  His colleagues organised a farewell reception at the Royal Society of Medicine in March 2010 in his honour.  Among those present were past colleagues - Mick Bewick and Sue Snowden, and current medical and nursing colleagues - Nicos Kessaris, Jiri Fronek, Steve Nelson, Professor Oliveira, Iain MacPhee, Joyce Popoola, Debu Banerjee, Reza and Monica McCann and Helen Gregson.  Surgeons from the Royal Free Hospital - the Fernando father and son, Nigel Heaton from King's, Nadir Hakim from the Hammersmith, Nizam Mahoud from Guy's were among those present.  Annette Fitch, Ruth Williams, Christine Collis and Janet Cordell represented the secretaries. David Westbroek, Ayaz Hussein, Adam Frampton and Wayne Lam were among the trainees there.  Mei, Tsung and Azra, and Robert and Helen were family members present.  The surprise of the evening was the name of Rene engraved on the RSM Wall of Honour (see picture).  Rene was very touch by this gesture initiated by Nicos, Jiri and Joyce.  In the afternoon, Rene had been invited to present certificates of appreciation to the living donors of the past years. It was also the World Kidney Donor day (see picture.)

Robert started his 3rd Rugby season.  Last season was shortened when Robert fractured his left collar bone during a rugby game.  He received a second consecutive shield from his Rugby Club the Old Alleyians.  This year Robert is scheduled to play a lot of Rugby.  In cluing traing, he has 6 sessions per week.  He plays or trains on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursday, Fridays, and Saturdays with his school.  He plays or trains with the Old Alleyians on Sundays.  He no longer attends Chinese classes at St Paul's church in Eaton Square.  Instead he is having personal tution once a week on Sunday afternoons.  Robert is working very hard t maintain the hugh standard he set last year.  He received 5 Dulwich College Master's commendations last year.  Helen has promised to get him a iPad if he continues to shine at school.

In July 2010,Helen, Robert, Jean (Helen's mum) and Rene flew back to KL, Malaysia for a Family Reunion.  Becuase of Helen's pelvic problems, they flew Business Clss which was rather fun.  The first week was spent in Penang, initially at the Trader's Hotel in George Town and then at Golden Sands at Betu Ferringhi.  Richard joined them in Penang for 3 nights.

The reunion was held at the Grand Millennium Ballroom on 19th July.  The family stayed in the hotel.  The first evening was the most busy, some 80 people attended the reunion.  Relative came from China, Australia, North America and the UK.  It was great fun. Click here for photos

The following evening was another feast at Matthias' House.  He had marquees erected which was just as well, as it rained cats and dogs before settling.  Ther were lots to eat - a mobile Stem boat stall, Laksa, Roast Pork, Ice Kachang etc.  There was once again too much food.

The third and final evening was another meal, this time at the Overseas Restaurant in Imbi Road, Kuala Lumpur.

Richard flew back to the UK as he had to go back to work on Saturday 25th July.  The rest hired a car and drove to Kuantan in the East Coast.  The first two nights were spent in the Swiss Garden Hotel.  Then we all upsticked to stay at the Tanjong Jara Resort in Dungun.  The place was simple magnificient.  We had two adjoining luxurious rooms. We stayed 4 nights. The cost inclusive of 3 meals a day was cheaper then the 4 star Hotel in Kuantan.  This is because the stay at Tanjong Jara was booked in Malaysia while the Kuantan hotel was booked through the internet from UK.  Lesson is that better deals are to be had if bookings are made locally.

While at Tanjong Jara, Robert and Rene went off one night to see the giant turtles.  They were able to witness two giant green turtles.  The last laid 111 eggs which were taken to a hatchery.  New hatchlings were also released into the sea.  It was a very interesting and exciting evening.  Robert and Rene got back to the hotel after 2:00 in the early hours of the morning, tired but exuberant.
